CAN WE CHANGE GOD’S MIND? ~ RAV A.I. KOOK
When prayer is understood in a crass way it becomes a mockery. A person calls out to G-d, whom he describes as powerful, resilient, mighty, dominant, victorious, and as One Who pursues honor and the obedience of grovelling servitude from His ministers and servants, and that He is inclined to be appeased by people who plead with Him by their requests and supplications.
Then He changes His authoritative will and fulfills their demand, which is not sacrosanct, but rather a simple base desire for some pleasant or unbecoming thing!? This type of prayer is objectionable….. It is lacking the inner power of the essence of tefillah, and it is considered a misguided offense.
התפילה כשהיא מתגשמת היא מתהפכת לפלסתר לזוהמת עבודה זרה. הוא קורא לאלוקים שהוא מציירו איתן, קשה, תקיף ושליט, נצחן ורודף כבוד ומשמעת [מ’ ראשונה מנוקדת חירק] של עבדות כפופה מנתיניו עבדיו; והוא דוקא עלול להיות מרוצה על ידי שיבקשו ממנו בבקשות ובתחנונים מן שפלי נפש, אז משתנה הוא מחפצו העז וממלא את המבוקש, והמבוקש איננו אצילי כ”א פשוט חפץ גס של צורך נאה או מכוער. תפילה זו פסולה היא, שכורה ואלילית, חסרה היא העצמיות התוכית של מהות התפילה ותחשב לחטאה לתפלה.~אוצרות הראי”ה / מאורות הראיה / מאורות התפילה פרק ראשון
